Thursday, October 19, 2023

International Credit Union (ICU) Day® celebrates the spirit of the global credit union movement. The day is recognized to reflect upon the credit union movement’s history, promote its achievements, recognize hard work and share member experiences. International Credit Union (ICU) Day® has been celebrated on the third Thursday of October since 1948.

This year, we mark the historic recognition of the 75th anniversary. This milestone offers us the unique opportunity to acknowledge the tireless effort of credit union employees while celebrating you, our members, the world over. Always — people helping people.

3 Steps to Better Holiday Budgeting

According to the National Retail Federation, over the last five years, Americans have spent an average of $641 on holiday gifts, $224 on non-gift items such as food and decorations, and $139 on other non-gift purchases. That equates to $1000 on average for holiday spending. If you’re looking to save on holiday expenses this year, follow these 3 easy budgeting steps.

1. Create holiday spending categories – Categorizing your holiday expenses can help you prioritize your spending. Common categories include Gifts & Gift-Giving Supplies; Travel; Food & Entertainment; Holiday Décor & Attire; and Charitable Donations & Tips.
2. Allocate Funds Across Categories – Start with an overall spending limit in mind and then divide that number across categories as you see fit. This total number should be one you can easily cover(ideally with cash) so you don’t accrue holiday debt. If you need to cut spending in certain categories, get creative where possible. Consider making some of your gifts rather than buying, driving rather than flying, revamping a closet outfit rather than buying new.
3. Shop & Track – As you begin to tackle your shopping list, track your spending against your budget in each category. If you spend more than anticipated in one category, move funds from another to cover it and stay true to your limit.

By following these 3 easy steps, you should be able to better manage your holiday spending and avoid carrying debt into the New Year.

End of Year Money Moves

end of year

As we approach the end of 2023, there are some key money moves you can make to finish the year strong and set yourself up for financial success in the new year.

1. Review your budget and savings progress against your 2023 goals and set new goals for 2024 accordingly.
2. Check your progress on paying down debt and increase as you can. The less debt you carry into the New Year, the better!
3. Contribute anything you can to your 401k or IRA before December 31st.
4. Review your beneficiaries and will to ensure information is accurate and up to date.
5. Review your Excel credit card benefits and reward offers. Transfer other card balances to Excel to save money.
6. Review your insurance policies and get comparison quotes. If you can save, make the switch!
7. Review all subscriptions and monthly services and eliminate extraneous expenses.

Reviewing your finances now and making any necessary cuts or adjustments before the end of the calendar year is the best way for you to enter the New Year on a solid financial foundation.
