Traveling this summer? Do these 7 things before you leave!
Whether you’re headed away for a few days or a few weeks this summer, do these 7 things before you leave. This list can help protect your home and valuables while you’re gone and ensure peace of mind during your travels.
1. Notify your credit card company – You’ll want to make sure your credit card works during your travels and you have enough available credit to cover your expenditures. Let us know.
2. Contact your cellular provider – If you’re traveling abroad, your cell service provider can help you set up the least expensive plan for making calls, sending texts, and/or accessing the Internet from your device.
3. Pay your bills – If you have bills with due dates during your travel, make sure to pay early or schedule those payments accordingly via online banking.
4. Clean out your wallet – Clean out your wallet of any items you won’t need during travel. This could include loyalty cards, gift cards, extra credit cards, etc. The less you carry, the less to worry about should your wallet become misplaced.
5. Manage your mail – Place a hold on your mail delivery or ask a neighbor to collect your mail while you’re gone to eliminate the chance of it getting stolen.
6. Secure your home – Before you leave home, make sure to lock all entry points, set your alarms and light timers, set your HVAC to lower your usage, and disconnect any electronics not plugged into a surge protector.
7. Unplug from social media – Do not broadcast on social media that you are away from home as this can alert burglars your house is empty.
Cyber Tips
Protect your data online with these cyber tips and remember we will never contact you to ask for your online banking information, pin number(s) or password(s).
In a growing age of fraud, beware of fraudsters posing as Excel FCU via text, email or phone. We’ve got you and encourage you to call us directly if you have any questionable request for information. Additionally, take these steps to protect your digital assets and information from cyber threats. By practicing the following good cyber hygiene tips, you can ensure the safety and security of your digital assets and information while online!
1. Turn on Multifactor Authentication – MFA is an effective security measure that requires an extra form of identification (PIN, fingerprint, confirmation text), on top of your password, when trying to access your accounts.
2. Update Your Software – Keeping your devices up to date with the latest security patches and utilizing automatic updates for operating systems, antivirus software, and applications will help protect your data from cybercrime.
3. Recognize and Report Phishing – Be cautious of unsolicited phishing emails, texts, and calls that ask for personal information. Don’t click on links or attachments from unknown sources and avoid sharing sensitive information or credentials over the phone or email.
4. Use Strong Passwords – Make sure your passwords are long, unique, random, and include all four-character types. Password managers are great tools to create and store passwords for you.
Tips for students headed to college
![notice notice](https://growthbydesign.org/excelcu/newsletters/imgs/summer24/college.jpg)
Are you or someone you know headed to college for the first time this fall? Your new independence and expectations for success can make the process overwhelming. Just stay calm and consider these tips to make the transition a breeze!
1. Get ahead and stay ahead – It’s a lot easier to earn a good grade if you start the semester with your best foot forward. Commit to your classes and the new study schedule on day one and stay ahead as long as you can to avoid playing catch up later.
2. Create a routine – Develop a routine with a designated time to wake up, eat, attend classes, study, workout, and rest. A well-planned routine will keep you feeling accomplished and focused.
3. Make a to-do list – Start small by writing down your plans for each day and then see if it helps boost your productivity.
4. Create a study zone – Find a quiet and clean area and designate it as your go-to study space. Often visiting a location outside your home to study (such as the library) can keep you free of distractions and boost your productivity.
5. Take breaks – Take breaks every hour or so during your studies to stretch your legs, have a snack, and refresh your mind.
6. Meet professors and stay engaged – Visiting your professors during their office hours can show your interest and commitment to the class as well as give you an opportunity to ask questions for understanding.
7. Manage Stress – If you’re feeling stressed, take a time out and find a go-to stress relieving exercise or activity to help you regroup. If the stress becomes more than you can handle alone, ask for help.
