How to Use Your HELOC
The flexibility of a HELOC means you’re not locked into using funds for one specific purpose. You can withdraw what you need for different expenses throughout your draw period.
Draw Period and Repayment Terms
Draw Period
During the draw period, you can access funds from your credit line as needed. This phase typically lasts several years, giving you ongoing access to borrow and repay at your own pace. Excel offers interest-only payment options during the draw period, which keeps your monthly payments lower while you’re actively using the line. You can also pay toward the principal if you want to reduce your balance faster.
Repayment Period
Once the draw period ends, your HELOC enters the repayment period. You can no longer withdraw additional funds, and your monthly payments will include both principal and interest. These payments will be higher than the interest-only payments you made during the draw period, but they’re structured to help you pay off your balance over the remaining term.

Why Choose a Credit Union HELOC?
Credit Unions vs. Banks
Credit unions operate differently than traditional banks, and those differences work in your favor. Banks answer to shareholders and focus on maximizing profits. Credit unions are member-owned, not-for-profit institutions where every member is a part-owner. This structure allows us to offer better rates, lower fees, and more personalized service.
